Assistive device

Assistive devices are external devices that are designed, made, or adapted to assist aperson to perform a particular task. They are important in supporting people with disabilities in activities of dailylife and inclusion. Assistive devices will enablechildren with disabilities to access education and go on to productive employment. So, assistive devices contribute to break the vicious cycle of poverty and disability.

Article 3 (General obligations) of The UN convention on Rights of persons withdisabilities enjoins countries to work on and encourage the use of goods, services, equipment and facilities that can be used by all persons with disabilities in all aspects of life.

Article 20 (Personal mobility) – states that States Partiesmust, amongst other things, facilitate access to quality mobility aids, provide training inmobility skills, and encourage producers of mobility aids, devices and assistivetechnologies, to “take into account all aspects of mobility for persons with disabilities.”Many personwith disabilities depend on assistive devices to enable them to carry outdaily activities and participate actively and productively in community life. Therefore, BCDBhutan can supply goods and services for persons with disabilities toprocure, maintain and use assistive devices.
