Jomolhari Round Trek (14 days)

This is a nine-day trek starting from Shana, Paro, and ending at Dodena near Thimphu. The route passes through two high passes from Jangothang. The trek is strenuous but it is very popular. The highest point on the trek is 4,115 m.

  1. Arrive in Paro

Upon arrival at Paro airport, you will be received by the representatives from BCD-Bhutan and transferred to the hotel.

Dinner and overnight stay in a hotel

  1. Paro sightseeing – Hike to Taktshang Monastery

After breakfast, acclimatize by hiking to Taktshang Monastery (The Tiger’s Nest).

After lunch, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred monasteries dating back to the introduction of Buddhism in the country in the 7th century.

Dinner and overnight stay in a hotel

  1. Paro to Shana

After breakfast, visit:

  • Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower which has been the National Museum of Bhutan since 1967.
  • Rinpung Dzong (Paro Dzong) built in 1646 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. The dzong presently houses district administrative centre and monastic body.

After lunch, drive to Shana.

  1. Shana to Thangthangka (start of trek)

Time: 7-8 hrs

Distance: 22 km

Trail: 770 m ascent, 10 m descent

Campsite altitude: 3,610 m

  1. Thangthangka to Jangothang

Time: 5-6 hrs

Distance 19 km

Trail: 480 m ascent

Campsite altitude: 4,080 m

Rest day at Jangothang, enjoy the superb view all around.

For day hike, you have three options:

  1. Hike to Jomolhari Glacier which is around 4 ½ hours (back and forth)
  2. Hike to Jichu Drake Glacier which is around 3 hours (back and forth).
  3. Walk up the mountain between Jomolhari and Jichu Drake, the summit is at 5,200 m with a great view of both the mountains. This is 8 hours (back

and forth).

  1. Jangothang to Lingzhi

Distance: 18 km

Time: 6-7 hours

Ascent: 840 m

Descent: 870 m.

  1. Lingzhi to Shodu

Camp at Shodu: 4,080 m

Distance: 22 km

Time: 8-9 hours

Ascent: 940 m

Distance: 16 km

Walking time: 5-6 hours

Campsite altitude: 3,320 m

Distance: 15 km

Walking time: 4-6 hours

Ascent: 290 m

  1. Dolamkencho to Dodena to Thimphu

Distance: 8 km

After lunch, visit:

  • National Memorial Choeten built in 1974 in honour of late King His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck.
  • Thangtong Dewachen Nunnery in Zilukha.
  • The largest and the tallest statue of sitting Buddha in the world.
  • Tashichho Dzong, the seat of the central government and the Central Monastic Body, including the summer residence of Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot of Bhutan)

Overnight stay in a hotel

  1. Thimphu to Punakha to Thimphu

Drive to Punakha via Dochula Pass. If the weather is clear, we stop for a while at Dochula to enjoy the view of Himalayan ranges.

After lunch, visit:

Punakha Dzong built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and located between Pho Chu (Male River) and Mo Chu (Female River). Punakha is still the winter residence of Je Khenpo. King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck convened the National Assembly there in 1952.

Chime Lhakhang built by Lam Ngawang Choje on the spot where Lam Drukpa Kunley subdued the demoness of Dochula. The temple is also known as “the Temple of Fertility”.

In the evening, drive back to Thimphu.
